GEORGE H. HANDY, MD 1942, of Sun City, Ariz.; Feb. 21, 2008
George Handy graduated from the Univeristy of Idaho before graduating from Rush in 1942. While in Chicago, he married Irene Zuelsdorf, his wife for 51 years until her passing in 1992. Handy served four years in the Army Air Force during World War II. Following the war, he co-established the Garrison-Handy Clinic in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., where he practiced general medicine for 20 years. In 1964, Handy completed a graduate degree in public health at the University of Minnesota. He became the Wisconsin State Health Officer in 1971 and promoted health programs across the state for 10 years. In 1985, he retired to Sun City, Ariz., where he married Karen Anderson in August 1992. Handy was a member of the Alumni Association of Rush Medical College Executive Council for many years and was instrumental in maintaining close ties between Rush Medical College and its early alumni.
